With the rise in temperatures, mosquitoes, flies, and cockroaches become a real nuisance in homes. In addition to the inconvenience they cause, these insects can also transmit diseases, including dengue and other infections spread by mosquitoes. It is essential to protect yourself effectively against their presence. A simple and highly effective homemade solution allows you to eliminate them naturally without harmful chemicals.
To prepare this remedy, you first need a plastic PET bottle, whether small or large. This bottle will be used to make a powerful trap against mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects. Start by cutting the bottle in half, in the upper part. This can be done with a knife or scissors, depending on what you have at hand.
The first step is to heat half a liter of water for about 10 minutes. Once the time is up, turn off the heat and add four tablespoons of sugar. Mix well, then let it cool until the mixture is lukewarm. During this time, take the bottom part of the bottle and wrap it with aluminum foil. This aluminum cover helps to enhance the effectiveness of the trap.
When the sugary water is lukewarm, pour it into the bottom part of the prepared bottle. Then add a small packet of active dry yeast (baker’s yeast). There’s no need to mix: the natural reaction between the yeast and sugar will produce carbon dioxide (CO₂). This gas is the same one that humans exhale when breathing, and it strongly attracts mosquitoes and other flying insects.
Now place the top part of the bottle upside down, like a funnel, into the bottom part. Be sure to remove the cap beforehand to allow the gas to escape through the neck. This ingenious device works by attracting mosquitoes, flies, and other insects using the CO₂ released. Once inside the bottle, they are unable to escape and end up drowning in the liquid.
To further enhance the trap’s effectiveness, you can add a few pieces of banana peel to the mixture. These organic waste materials boost the sweet smell, attracting even more insects. This system allows you to get rid of the most invasive insects in your home in no time.
It’s important to note that while flies may seem harmless, they are carriers of many diseases. They often land on contaminated surfaces, such as trash or feces, and then land on food. They can thus transmit bacteria responsible for diarrhea, salmonella, and other intestinal infections. Pets are also affected, as these insects stress them out and can transmit diseases to them.
It is therefore crucial to keep the house clean and avoid anything that could attract these pests. Here are some additional tips to strengthen your fight against flies and mosquitoes:
- Always keep trash bins tightly closed. Even the smallest residue of odor can attract flies.
- Regularly clean kitchen counters to avoid the accumulation of crumbs, food scraps, or peels.
- Don’t leave overripe fruits or vegetables exposed in the basket. These quickly attract insects.
- Do the dishes promptly after meals: leftover food on plates or pots is a real magnet for insects.
- Take out the trash daily to prevent waste from decomposing inside the house.
- Separate recyclable waste from organic waste and make sure to wash containers before storing them. This prevents fermentation and insect proliferation around containers.
- Have one bin dedicated to dry waste and another for biodegradable waste, and maintain them well.
By adopting this simple and cost-effective trap, and following a few basic hygiene rules, it is entirely possible to eliminate flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches effectively from your environment. This natural method poses no danger to humans or pets and can be used in any room of the house.
